Commercial invoice payment terms define when a client is legally required to pay for services rendered. Choosing the wrong payment terms can severely strain your working capital and cause payroll cash crunches.
1. Comparing Payment Term Durations
Net 15
Full payment due within 15 days. Recommended for small project milestones and weekly freelance retainers.
Net 30
Standard corporate term in North America & Europe. Gives client accounts payable teams 30 days to process.
Net 60 / Net 90
Extended credit terms requested by large enterprises. Always negotiate milestone deposits on Net 60+ terms.
2. Early Payment Discount Mathematics (2/10 Net 30)
An early payment discount incentive (e.g. 2/10 Net 30) allows clients to deduct 2% of the invoice balance if paid within 10 days, otherwise full amount is due in 30 days.
Discount Formula: Total Amount × (1 - Discount Percentage)
Example: $5,000 Invoice × (1 - 0.02) = $4,900 if paid within 10 days.
3. Enforcing Overdue Penalties
If Net 30 payment terms expire, calculate contractual late interest fees using Vicaksha's Late Fee Engine and send automated follow-up notices.
